Article 1: Walmart Gets Its Bite Back
Principal Theme
The principal theme in the article is business recovery from Covid-19 amidst stiff competition. In other words, while Walmart has shown a remarkable recovery from the disruption caused by the pandemic, it still faces competition from other critical players in the industry like Amazon. Thus, underpinning this theme is two aspects: recovery from the pandemic and competition. As a result, there are several strategic issues to consider.
Key Strategic Issue (s)
In the first instance, Walmart is banking on its 800 million square feet of retail space. The company has stores within 10 miles of 90% of the American population. As the country recovers from the pandemic, young shoppers are increasingly visiting these stores, giving Walmart a competitive advantage. Based on this observation, the company plans to establish an additional 140m square feet of retail space and has re-introduced brands like Ray-Ban, primarily not found in Walmart stores (Walmart Get Its Bite Back, 2022).
Walmart intends to attract online shoppers without compromising its brick-and-motor visits in the second instance. To this end, the organization has unveiled a subscription service that rivals Amazon Prime. This move has attracted young, urban, and affluent online shoppers. One way in which Walmart will not compromise its foot traffic in stores is by retaining and enhancing the sale of groceries that are rarely bought online.
Implications for Industry/Sector/Country
The implications for the sector are that consumers will experience enhanced customer experience such as quick delivery of products. Further, it also means rivals like Amazon will continue to tune their services to retain their relevance in the industry.
Personal Commentary
In my opinion, Walmart stands out because it has managed to retain a majority of its employees through the pandemic while other organizations laid-off workers. This could be its direct marketing approach highlighting the organization's solidarity with workers and their families....
