The single-payer health care system refers to one of the approaches that aim at creating a universal medical coverage for all persons in a country. Principally, the system implies the existence of only one health care financer for the citizens in a nation such as the government, which then assumes all the risks related to the enrollees. However, the system mentioned above does not necessarily mean that direct employment of health personnel and hospitals are solely under the ownership of the government. Still, it is solely meant to eliminate other players such as private health insurance from obtaining benefits from such a program. The United Kingdom, is one example of a country that successfully employs the single-payer healthcare system to meet its health needs, despite the method having its benefits and drawbacks.
Like in many countries that promote universal health care, the National Health Service (NHS) in the United Kingdom is said to extend and goes beyond single-payer health care, which means the country owns medical facilities, hospitals, and employ doctors. What works for the system is that all citizens are equal when it comes to the provision of health care, and there is also the subsidization of medications. According to Ragupathy et al. (2012), the single-payer health system in the UK entitles citizens of English and Wales to treatment under the National Health Service. Also, it reduces the burden for the citizen in terms of paying for health services.
On the other hand, what does not work for the single-payer health care system in the UK, is the fact that the country is left with a large burden of ensuring all persons are entitled to free healthcare. There is also strong resistance from political institutions, private health insurers, and medical manufacturers who are limited when it comes to pricing.
Conclusively, different countries employ different approaches in administering care to patients. The UK employs the single-payer health system that means that there are no other insurers envisioned to provide health care apart from the government or the only body mandated to do so. Although the system has certain drawbacks, it seems to work for them.
