1 Introduction
According to Fapohunda (2013), teams play a critical role in the achievement of organizational goals and vision. Delta One Group is an IT company which provides digital services to its clients including web development, web designing, intelligent business apps and mobile apps. The company has different departments and every department has its own specialized team to accomplish tasks. Delta One has undergone some recent changes so the company formed new teams for task accomplishments. The new teams are comparatively larger in size. Team members have no interaction and collaboration with each other. The communication process was halted due to new members and larger teams which negatively affected their motivation and job commitment.
* As assessment of the Current State of Communication and Motivation of the Team
The current state of communication and motivation of the team is disappointing. Teams are unable to accomplish their tasks failing to meet the deadlines. Their understanding of projects and tasks is poor. Internal team conflicts have further worsened the situation and are left unresolved. Lack of trust and information sharing prevails in the teams. All in all, there is a dire need to build teams and improve communication and motivation through some development activities and team-building exercises.
* Development Activities to Improve Communication and Motivation of the Team
* Activity 1: Build a bridge. This activity is designed to increase team collaboration. The activity will take place within organizational vicinity for instance; conference hall, training room or lawn. The large team will be divided into two equal groups. They are required to build a bridge with the materials supplied to them by the activity organizer. Each group has to build half-bridge followed by connecting the two pieces to complete it with the same design. The activity is quite challenging because space is divided by a sheet or cloth in between and they cannot see each other’s activity and design. It also uses brainstorming methods to make effective use of material provided to them for building half-bridge (Priestley, 2015). The group activity lasts for about 1 hour. The material provided for the activity may include bricks, wood sticks, glue, paper, pipes, sheets, cloth, measuring tape or masking tape etc. The activity can be performed between large teams. The team size is not important for this activity.
Outcome
This team activity is designed to improve communication and collaboration among team members because they need rigorous discussion throughout the activity to explain their ideas and activity with each other. The team-building activity also helps in conflict management and problem-solving because team members must share ideas and options with each other to complete the bridge.
