With the future of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act being uncertain, we hear continuing discussion as to whether the United States could (and/or should) adopt a single-payer system. Could a single-payer system be possible, even though it is forecast to cost trillions of dollars? How would it affect health care costs, coverage networks, types of covered vs. noncovered services, patient waiting times (for appointments, testing, procedures, and surgeries), coinsurances, and (finally) our taxes? Would currently working employees be required to give up their existing coverage for what will be provided under the single-payer system? Once you have read the assigned background readings, as well as completed some peer-reviewed research of your own, address the following: 1. Describe an example of how a single-payer system (such as ‘Medicare For All’, as just one example) works in the United States. 2. Looking at examples of other countries with a single-payer system, what are the specific benefits of having such a single-payer system? Include at least three specific benefits, citing credible sources for your facts. 3. Looking at examples of other countries with a single-payer system, what are the specific drawbacks of having such a single-payer system? Include at least three specific drawbacks, citing credible sources for your facts. 4. Are you in favor of a single-payer system in the United States? Justify your position for or against this with credible sources. SLP Assignment Expectations 1. Conduct additional research to gather sufficient information to support your analysis. 2. Provide a response of 3-5 pages, not including title page and references. Single-Payer System in the United States
How a single-payer system works in the United States
A single payer system is also known as Medicare for all in the U.S is a system whereby funding for healthcare is provided by a single entity, such as the federal government (Glied & Lambrew, 2018). All residents under this system receive core coverage without considering their occupation, income, or health status. Virtually, this general pattern is followed by all healthcare systems, but the payers vary widely from one system to the other. In the United States of America, patients in the private insurance market are required to purchase their coverage from any insurance companies among the numerous competing insurers (Cai, Runte, Ostrer, Berry, Ponce, Rodriguez, & Kahn, 2020). Owing to the fact that different individuals have insurance coverage from different insurers, there are various payers within the healthcare system of the United States. There have been calls to adopt a single payer healthcare system in America so as to unify payers.
In a healthcare system that is purely single-payer, there is only one payer, as suggested by the name. In most cases, this payer is the national government, although this is not always the case (Gaffney, Woolhandler, Angell, & Himmelstein, 2016). This is also the same manner in which some portions of Medicaid are administered in the United States. In this case, it is the federal government that provides healthcare coverage, and there are no private insurers that are involved in paying for the healthcare of individuals.
