Infant mortality is a measure used to determine population health and quality of health care (State Infant Mortality Collaborative, 2013). Infant mortality is the death of an infant before their first birthday. The government first recognized infant mortality in the 1900s, which led to the Federal Children's Bureau formation. The infant mortality rate is not used to measure the number of infant deaths only. It is also used to indicate the poverty levels in a country, community health status, and availability of quality health care (State Infant Mortality Collaborative, 2013).
The health of children globally is measured mainly through infant mortality rates. The universal acceptance and ease of calculating using the annual infant mortality rate have led to its use across regions (State Infant Mortality Collaborative, 2013). The comparison of infant mortality rates is used while assessing the needs of children and families and evaluating the impact of health programs.
