Despite having sold more than 40 million copies, To Kill a Mockingbird is still one of the most banned books in American school curriculum. This is based in its adult theme and charged language.
Now that you have viewed this version (which is almost identical to the novel), what do you think about his ban? Please respond to the following prompt, using the film study, and two other academic/reliable sources. In your essay, use cited text examples from both research sources as well as the film.
Should Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird be banned in middle and high schools? Why or why not?

Why “To Kill a Mocking Bird” should be banned.
Lee’s famous book, “To Kill a mocking bird" has been marred with many controversies since its first release in 1960. Notably, according to (Dalton, 2022), many readers and editorialists have lauded the book as a classic model of antiracist literature, hence untouchable and sacrosanct. Consequently, the book has been quite a success since it won the Pulitzer Prize and is one of the most selling books in America. However, on the other hand, many parents, especially African American parents and scholars, have critically criticized it for using racist slurs and further perpetuating the notion of whiteness. Particularly, considering the book is primarily assigned to eighth- and ninth-grade pupils it consists of elements that make parents uncomfortable, and hence it has been challenged and banned several times. Generally, Lee's book, "To kill a mocking bird" should be outlawed in junior and senior high schools since it perpetuates whiteness, controversially depicts racism and inequality, and uses profane language which promotes the stereotypical generalizations of Black Americans.
Critically, "To Kill a Mockingbird" perpetuates the notion of whiteness or white superiority instead of providing an understanding of systemic racism in society. In the book, Lee extraordinarily depicts Atticus Finch as a reputable lawyer, hence a highly privileged member of the social hierarchy of Maycomb town (Foss, 2021). On the other hand, Lee portrays blacks as props rather than main characters, mainly depicting Tom Robinson as crippled and helpless. In addition, the book paints Atticus Finch's character as a heroic white savior who does his best to save the vulnerable disabled African American man. Therefore, the author emphasizes the white character's superiority and personal growth of understanding rather than the black people's struggle with discrimination, prejudice, and racism. As (Dalton, 2022) indicates, the lack of blacks' or generally people of color's voices in typical literature supports a hidden curriculum that promotes or perpetuates the notion of whiteness as normal and neutral. On the other hand, (Foss, 2021) demonstrates that the book is a symbol of new racism as it embodies white domination and power built into institutions and works in subtler ways compared to old racism's physical violence on victims but is still damaging. In general, the book perpetuates the concept of whiteness by ignoring the misery of black characters and exalting white characters excessively.
