The Hand That Feeds
The Hand That Feeds is a documentary that talks about the struggles that undocumented immigrant workers went through in an attempt to gain fair wages and better working environment in New York. This group of undocumented immigrants prepares and serves food and coffee in Upper East Side of New York. From the outside, the hotel where they work seems to be efficient and a good business. However, this is not the case because the film reveals that workers faced sub legal wages, dangerous machinery and also insults from their managers. In January 2012, the group formed a union as they tried to make their voice heard as well as getting better working conditions. The New York City investors were reluctant and thus they decided to risk deportation or loss of livelihood as they engaged in a year-long battle. Unfortunately, their complaints were ignored by the New York State Department of Labor and their request to join bigger unions canceled.
The message being conveyed by this documentary is that many undocumented workers work below minimum wages and with constant fear they will lose their jobs. Many of them do not realize that they are entitled to same working conditions as fledged Americans.
Importance of undocumented workers in the Americans economy is that immigrants create jobs by starting up small businesses thus creating employment, they contribute to competitiveness especially in technology and service industries and also enhance income in the economy.
