This exercise is meant to help you brainstorm ideas for a short story in the style of Flannery O'Connor.

1) Open the slides titled "Views of the Woods" (Links to an external site.)
2) Complete as many **"prompts" as you can before the end of our session (1-1.5 hours). You can spend extra time on the prompts that inspire you; you can skip the prompts that don't inspire you. There is no max/min limit for each prompt.
3) Submit your short story ideas on canvas.

**Prompt Instructions: First, read the passage by Flannery O'Connor. Pay attention to her style, structure, and word choice. Use her writing as inspiration when you respond to the prompt. The prompts don't need to relate to each other; we're just brainstorming ideas for a short story. But if you find it easy to connect them all, you should go for it!

Prompt # 2 (Slide 3)
While Joy was riding her pink Japanese-style bike on her way home, heavy rain suddenly poured down, making her clothes and bag drenched. It was the kind of weather that made their town look even more gloomy and empty.
Uncertain where to go, she looked around and saw a nearby bus stop with a small shed, just enough to keep her and her bike sheltered from the rain. As she sat on the wooden bench, a familiar voice came closer and closer. It was the voice she had wanted to hear all day but at the same time tried to avoid ever since she learned about the dreaded demolition. When the footsteps reached a stop, Joy bowed her head and looked to the ground, hoping that Ally won't notice her.
Ally stood and leaned on the shed. She had been roaming around the city all day collecting signatures of the townspeople who oppose the construction of the theme park. Despite being tired, she'd rather stand than sit with the very person who's against her cause.
The heavy rain continued to fill the deafening silence between the two.
Prompt # 5 (Slide 6)
Every day before going to school, Joy often passed by the area of the upcoming construction, just glancing at the changes of her awaited theme park. Two weeks ago, she saw a middle-aged man, whom she assumed was the owner, discussing with some engineers and designers about the plans he had for it. When she had quickly passed by the area yesterday, she noticed that the stores and restaurants that were once filled with tourists and loved by the locals were already closed and empty. Looking at the scenario made her feel both sad and thrilled.
