1 Exodus 29: 20-21
The symbol of the lamb as a sacrifice has been one of the most well-known symbols in the bible. For the most part, it signified an offering to God to atone for one’s sins. In this text, it could be seen that there is an instruction to ‘slaughter the ram, and take some of its blood’. This symbolizes the concept of sin and sanctity, which is practised during the times before the birth of Christ. It must be noted that during those times, the dominant belief was proto-orthodox Christianity, which has a different view compared to the new religion and practices that emerged during the birth of Christ. One of these practices involves substitutionary atonement.
On the one hand, the lamb is the symbol of sanctity, for it is regarded as innocent and pure. Thus, by instructing the individual to “put it on the ridge” of their ears, this means that their ears would then be sanctified and should become attentive to the voice of God. Additionally, the instruction to place it upon the right thumb and toe signifies the individual’s commitment not to hold any sinful things and to walk the path of righteousness for the rest of their lives. On the other hand, the one who is making the sacrifice is the ‘sinner’ who is asking for repentance by offering an innocent life in his stead.
