United States Intelligence community oversight entails intelligence agencies and other subordinate organizations collaborating to facilitate information gathering in support of national security. Military intelligence, civilian intelligence, and analysis offices within the offices of federal executives are some of the agencies involved in intelligence gathering. However, the intelligence agencies have to uphold public control and insight of their activities through responsible use of power and assurance of accountability (Leigh & Wegge, 2019). In the United States, the intelligence community facilitates high-quality assessment, analysis, and advancement of citizens’ interests while respecting their civil liberties. Intelligence oversight plays a critical role in gathering intelligence while maintaining checks and balances in security services.
The legislative and executive government branches share the duties of intelligence community oversight. In such a case, oversight entails supervising various intelligence agencies while accountable for their actions. Therefore, intelligence oversight is a strategy of facilitating the functioning of the intelligence community and its adherence to existing regulations in gathering essential information. However, the relevant bodies should protect the privacy and interests of individuals’ during oversight. According to Leigh and Wegge (2019), the intelligence community collaborates with various groups, such as the office of partner engagement, to coordinate, collaborate, and integrate with the private sector and military partners.
Intelligence oversight committees control the checks and balances of individuals’ freedom across the homeland. The history of the intelligence community dates back to 1975 by a church committee under the leadership of Senator Frank as a democrat from Idaho. In one year, the committee had interviewed 800 witnesses. According to an analysis of the final report, intelligence agencies undermine the civil liberties of United States citizens. In some instances, the intelligence ought to undermine citizens’ constitutional rights to hold people accountable for their actions. However, U.S. intelligence oversight ought to make ethical decisions in the process of information gathering. Although the intelligence community is critical in enhancing United States security, the committee should uphold moral values in such a process.
Recommended Changes to the U.S Intelligence
The intelligence committee oversight needs to improve information gathering to enhance national security while upholding citizens’ civil liberties. The key focus should be maintaining a competitive advantage in strategic intelligence over the increasing adversaries in the future. The intelligence committee will have to adopt modern technology to collect and analyze intelligence.
