Emotional and Inspirational Communication
One of the primary roles of communication is persuasion. However, people retain obsolete perspectives even when better ones arise. It may often take great convincing to get such persons to subscribe to new ideologies. Furthermore, it may not be enough to appeal to logic because part of registered skepticism may associate with bias and emotional inclinations rather than rational convictions. Inspirational and emotional communication are thus essential skills.
Haidt analyzes three thinkers in his bid to define the influence of emotional and rational persuasions. On one end, Plato argued that reason should be the master of the will. On the other one, Hume regarded passions as superior and sovereign over reason. Jefferson reconciled the two thinkers postulating that both reason and sentiment should be co-rulers for sobriety to prevail (Haidt, 2013). Despite the difference of opinion, both reason and passions are critical to the art of persuasion. Inspirational and emotion-provoking communication follows sentiment.
