Plato’s brief dialogue is somewhat confusing as the conversation between Crito and Socrates is ingenious. In summary, Socrates is sentenced in prison and he is visited by his friend Crito. Crito starts by informing Socrates that the idea of not escaping from prison is an injustice by itself. Plato attempts to justify Socrates’ decision of staying in prison and face the murder charges instead of using the available getway to escape after being wrongfully convicted. Plato entwines the dilemma around Socrates, whereby his wrongful imprisonment and his decision not to escape from prison defines justice and injustices.
The question that spurs from the dialogue is whether an individual would be right to escape from prison if he or she was unjustly condemned if given the opportunity. The question is explored in the discourse as Crito is convincing Socrates to escape from prison since the accusation against him were weak and unjust. In spite of the relentless pleases of Crito, Socrates stood to his ground arguing that it was not correct to honor injustice with injustice, and therefore he had to stay and face the law (Weiss & Stewardson, 2013).
