Early in the movie Dorothy says to Eugene O’Neil: “I have something to give, but I don’t know what it is—or to whom I’m supposed to give it! Dorothy was arrested because of her criticism of the system. By saying of the system it implies the government that was in place in the early 1900s. Dorothy, through her journalism, questions policies that were outlined by the government agencies and which did not serve the interests of the poor. Throughout the movie, Dorothy cuts across as a humanitarian person. She would house, advice, and feed the poor. Through such actions, there are scriptural parallels that are in the Bible more so in the New Testament, like when Jesus fed the 5000 people and healed the sick. Jesus was showing mercy to the less privileged people in society, and Dorothy seemed to apply the same scriptures like the ones in the Bible. Dorothy raised her daughter Tammy in the right way (Roberts, 1982). A good example is by baptizing her, which was preparing her for Christian life.
By Cardinal Spellman saying that the ministry and lifestyle of Dorothy were challenging, it means that Dorothy was everywhere. It was difficult to understand Dorothy as she was involved in many sectors. As much as she did not have resources, she still took care of the less privileged in society. Moreover, her life was challenging as she was left by her lover, aborted but still got the courage to help other people. That is the reason Cardinal Spelman believes that the lifestyle and the ministry of Dorothy was challenging.
