Luo is the bourgeoisie and believes that the violin is merely a musical instrument and the village headman should not have banned the item for being a bourgeoisie toy and he believes that the Little Seamstress is not civilized. Four-Eyes represents the West as he reads non-Chinese books, but the narrator is more curious about his books than the other characters. The narrator represents the intellect who is willing to learn more and as he knows about the Mozart sonata and western composers.Which characters in the first scene represent the peasants, labor, and the East?
The Little Seamstress and the villages represent the peasants who are poor and live in the village mainly farming. The villagers represent the labor as they are used to manual labor unlike the urban people like the narrator, Luo and Four-Eyes (Sijie, 2002). The village headman and the village peasants represent the East where there is a collectivistic culture and focus on group harmony unlike the west, even as the headman likes music, cinema and storytelling is associated with western influence. Which characters are presented in a better light?
The narrator and the Seamstress are shown in a positive light, where the narrator plays the violin in songs that are changed to praise Mao and he may become a favorite of the communists for his composition. The Seamstress is from a village peasant family, but she connects with the narrator and Lou who are urban dwellers even as she is almost illiterate.
