Summary
Given the high level of consumption of drugs, many people have lost their lives as a result of consuming an overdose of drugs like opioid. Addicts also share various equipment like injections in an attempt to satisfy their desire for drugs. To get rid of this, the public health advocates for the construction of safe injection sites to reduce the cases of loss of lives and to ensure that the equipment used in well sterilized. However, some individuals are against the construction of such facilities since they claim that they instead encourage drug addiction, which puts lives at risk. The president of America, Donald Trump, has waged war against the installation of safe injection sites as he terms it as an iniquity. Nevertheless, some countries have gone ahead to construct safe injection facilities in a bid to ensure that the citizens are safe, and they do not use dirty equipment. Australia has about 120 facilities, and these have helped in minimizing the spread of diseases like HIV. Due to this, safe injection sites are not immoral since they protect people’s lives; they treat addicts through counselling and reduce the shame of drug users.
Protecting Lives
With safe injection sitesin place, one can ensure that the lives of the addicts are not affected. Various drug addicts often use dirty needles that they find on the streets and bathrooms in an attempt to satisfy their cravings for drugs. In addition, a number of them use these drugs in large quantities, and the overdoses lead to the death of some addicts. About half a million people in the United States perished having an overdose of opioids, and about 2% of them suffered from HIV as a result of sharing injections with others. In an attempt to get rid of all these incidences that put people’s lives at risk, having a safe injection site would be a better option. When such people get exposure to a safe environment, sterilized equipment is used to inject them, and there are minimal chances of having an overdose medication (Gordon, 2018). Hence putting in place safe injection sites protects the lives of people since it reduces the contraction of blood born infections due to the sterilized equipment used.
Addiction Treatment Options
Putting in place safe injection sites gives the addicts a chance to be taken to different rehabilitation centers to allow them to transform. Within the different facilities, there are always various counselors who talk to the drug addicts about what they should do to minimize the use of drugs (Cohen, 2018). Addicts are encouraged to seek long- term therapy programs through on-site counseling, which impacts their lives and urges them to transform. At Insite, an injection site in Vancouver, over six thousand individuals paid a visit to the facility in 2015, and about 464 taken for addiction treatment, and it turned out that half of them were able to complete and change (The Editors, 2018).
