So far this semester, we’ve worked on multiple steps to summarize an argument: group paragraphs into sections, define what each section “says” and “does”, differentiate the argument an author responds to from the argument he/she makes, and finally identify the hierarchy of different points (main claim, reason, evidence) in an argument. Your first major essay asks you to draw on these skills in order to summarize a complex reading. You will be interpreting what the essay means and what its important supporting points are, rather than how good or effective it is. In other words, this assignment asks for a descriptive rather than critical essay. Nevertheless, a summary still needs interpretation and explanation—your ideas—because you need to show why your chosen points are important ones. In other words, there can be several justifiable summaries of a complex reading, several but not infinite.
1. Introduction:
o state the author’s main claim (= the thesis statement of your summarized essay)
o outline the author’s major lines of reasoning (3 at most)
2. Body paragraphs:
o state the author’s each line of reasoning (= the topic sentence of each body paragraph in your essay)
o summarize and paraphrase the information/evidence relevant to the reason
 you can occasionally quote but you have to add one sentence after the quote to explain the quote

There are different reasons that people do not eat pork; ideally, some people are prohibited from consuming pork by their religious beliefs. For example, religious restrictions regarding the consumption of pork are mainly prevalent in the different regions such as in the Middle East where the Jews and Muslims consider the pigs as unclean. Instead, individuals with these religious views prefer taking other foods such as chicken. The author has explained that since her family had assimilated Jews, pork would only be taken in the form of fried and crispy bacon. Some of the theories outlined by the author that explains the multicultural taboo against the consumption of pork include, pigs are seen as vectors of disease, pig prohibition is established on the understanding of ecology and food chain and proscription against pork may be based on faith mysteries.
Pigs are examined as agents and carriers of diseases. Ideally, this is mainly attributed to the fact that; this view is attributed to the casual observation of pig diet, which is primarily garbage, and they also ingest their waste (Prose, 2009). Francine Prose has explained that her mother was cautious about raw pork and believed that if traces of pork found its way in a meal, then it would cause an agonizing death. Besides, the author has supported this claim by explaining that her aunt had been informed by a friend who knew someone who had died of trichinosis, a disease that is transmitted primarily in undercooked pork. It is for this reason that the author always ensured that her bacon was fried to a crisp.
