Describe “Smart Borders” in the context of detection capability?
Smart borders are developments in the present security that the United States created after 9/11. Smart borders have advanced technology equipment and expertise such as biometric methods to help security personnel recognize citizens, immigrants, and migrants. The advanced security apparatus in smart borders helps security agents share any information gathered from the United States with their Canadian counterparts. Notably, such technology smoothens operations and strengthens the Beyond the Border agreement for bordering countries. Research illustrates that strong border ties are essential since both countries have a shared security approach that leads to enhanced business operations. Other than developments in technology equipment, the Canadian administration has improved their defense expenditure by training their military personnel alongside the Americans, making them an inevitable ally in supporting any war (Topak et al., 2015). Smart borders intend to resolve the inconsistency of the nation’s borders. Besides, smart borders help countries keep their borders open for trade and tourism and keep them closed to extremist threats. The backbone of most smart borders is a multidimensional system that scrutinizes tourists and cargo before entering a country. Including biometric data in travelers’ passports is one of the most transparent smart border layers. Andreas (2012) avers that the private sector facilitates the organization and installation of new tracking features on cargo. Besides, the private sector helps to improve existing inspection technologies and enhance traffic management, thus reducing border congestion through the expansion of inspection points. The sole intention of establishing the smart border was to advance the existing technology and detection equipment. The basis of the technique is to facilitate the gathering, sharing, and utilization of information among relevant stakeholders. Smart border policies make it easier for officials to profile travelers at the border, reducing congestion. Although various researchers contend that smart border policies violate human rights, the government disagrees. For example, along the United States and Mexico boundaries, officials use pole-mounted cameras, radars, sensors, and motor scanners to prevent the entry of illegal goods and migrants.
