Generation of Themes
The qualitative aspect of this research involved the development of themes from patient experiences concerning their knowledge and application of IoT in smart cities. Themes entailed the main perceptions and experiences that the researcher drew from the respondents’ account that was relevant to the research question. Therefore, the researcher collected some pertinent information from the respondents through interviews, coded the responses, and then classified them into themes. The coding process entailed the identification of the themes from the respondents’ accounts and indexing them. The researcher identified the themes by noting concepts that were repeated the most by the participants.
In the study, some of the notable themes prominent in the respondents’ discussions on the role of IoT in their lives included work simplification. Concerning this theme, the respondents were categorical that their main objective in utilizing smart technology devices was to make their work easier by allowing them to communicate easily and remain connected with their homes while at work and vice versa. All the respondents provided this response based on the general public’s perception of the role of technology.
Another prominent theme from the responses was the engagement of the local data ecosystem. This theme had mixed responses because, according to some respondents, IoT devices collect or engage local data to lead to either positive or negative development. Consequently, some were more receptive to the use of IoT in their homes as they believed that it would help them be better connected to their home appliances.
