Content Analysis of Articles from American Journal of Education

Essay Instructions:

Conduct a preliminary content analysis of a current volume (published within the last two years) of a professional journal in your field , and discuss any trends in research design that you might observe (such as frequently used research strategies).
First, identify a journal volume. The journal should contain at least four (4) articles. If it includes more than four, that is fine, but you only need to analyze four articles within the volume. For your analysis, you might choose to write a paragraph on each article, and conclude with a section that synthesizes the discussion and talks about overall trends, or you might choose to write an essay in which you refer to the articles.
NOTE: One recommended, but not required strategy, would be to select a journal that is somewhat related to your topic, such as choosing a journal specific to ESL, early childhood education, special education, etc. Another recommended strategy would be to choose a journal that focuses on research methods you are considering using, such as a journal focusing on qualitative methods or quantitative methods.

Research design implies the overall strategy that investigators integrate the various parts of the research to ensure coherence and logical flow of ideas. The research problem plays a significant role in choosing the most appropriate research design that investigators can use. Different researchers use different research designs to address the research issue. The content analysis will focus on the American Journal of Education. The journal endeavors to bridge educational scholarship with intellectual and methodological diversity. It encourages rigorous dialogue between scholars and policymakers. While the journal has many articles, the focus will be on four of the articles from different researchers published in 2021. The articles will offer an insight into the research strategies employed.
In “This Is a Good Neighborhood. This Ain’t No Pittsburgh!”: Conflicting Narratives of Opioid Misuse within Rural School Districts and Communities” Ian Burfoot-Rochford and Kai A. Schafft examine how educators in Western Pennsylvania are addressing the issue of opioid misuse within their communities. The researchers analyze data derived from interviews and fieldwork. The choice of the method allowed the researchers to gather qualitative data, analyze it and come up with relevant findings. The results indicate that educational leaders understood the growing misuse of opioids.
In “A Choice between Second Chances: An Analysis of How Students Address Course Failure,” Samantha Viano endeavors to examine face-to-face (F2F) or online credit recovery (OCR) enrollment patterns for public schools in North Carolina. The investigator obtains data from administrative records in the state from all the public high school learners enrolled between 2012–13 and 2016–17. The analysis is majorly descriptive using squares regression and multilevel models. The results demonstrate that OCR has grown in popularity among high schools.
