Sharing the Wealth by Ned Carter

Do very wealthy people have a responsibility to share their money with the public, or may they keep their money to do whatever they like with it?  One wealthy man, Andrew Carnegie, spent the last years of his life giving most of his money away.

Carnegie, an immigrant from Scotland, began working at age 13. He worked hard and eventually made his fortune in the steel industry.  In 1901, Carnegie sold his companies for $ 225 million (the equivalent of over $ 6 billion in today's economy) and retired.  He then began spending his enormous wealth on the public.  

Carnegie once wrote, in being charitable, "the main consideration should be to help those who will help themselves." Among Carnegie's most important contributions are the Carnegie libraries.  With funds donated from Carnegie 's wealth, over 2,500 of these libraries were built in the United States, Canada, and other parts of the world.  Carnegie did not simply hand over some of his money for the libraries, however. He would pay for building the libraries, but each town was responsible for providing a building site, making money available to run each library, and for offering free services to all.  The libraries gave everyone access to books at a time when many book collections were privately owned.  

Carnegie also contributed to educational institutions, including establishing universities in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and Washington, DC, and funding university scholarships in Scotland.  His interest in music led him to finance such projects as construction of the famous Carnegie Hall in New York City.  

In his opinion, being wealthy required giving back.  He knew that the many men and women who had worked for him or bought his products had made him very rich.  He believed they should have the same opportunities to become wealthy as he had.
