I have learnt a lot from taking the course about patient care in today’s age of digital revolution. The course activities involved writing assignments, listening to audio, watching videos or PowerPoint presentations, working on Shadow Health Activities, grasping content from the assigned readings, and holding discussions with my fellow students. These activities met the course expectations or outcomes as given in the course descriptions. One particular aspect that was interesting is the way the field of nursing and other health sciences are increasingly evolving, which calls for progressive curricula and course content improvement. These advances in the course curriculum are aimed at equipping students with important communication and critical thinking skills, which they can later apply when caring for patients (Taglieri, Crosby & Patel, 2017).
In a study to assess the impact of integrating virtual patient activities on the confidence and competence as they attend to patients, Taglieri, Crosby, and Patel (2017) found out that students’ performance in clinical visits improved with the integration of virtual patient activities. These activities involve students interacting with a virtual patient simulator (VPS) in the skills lab which realistically simulates a life patient. My overall perspective is that VPS offers additional learning experiences besides instructions given in class, reading books, and other laboratory experiments.
