It is a common misconception among us that the sole aim of business is the accumulation of profits. From this idea, thoughts about business’ inherent moral (more particularly amoral) nature arises, while we justify that it is inevitable at the same time. However, in the article written by Solomon (1994), he discussed that businesses and businessmen do not need to tread this path, as profits and the ability to help others are not mutually exclusive. Particularly, he provided eight (8) rules that we could follow in order to engage in this world, without the need to sacrifice others. What I realized is that in order to become successful in this field, it would be best to follow “one’s own moral principles” (Solomon, 1994). This rule is crucial especially in times of conflicts, where one has to choose between two different choices that both seemingly right. To understand this, let us look at two different corporations that provide accurate representation and contradiction of what Solomon was talking about.
