The article, Outbreak of Serogroup B Meningococcal Disease at a University in California outlines the outbreak of Meningococcal Disease at a University in California in early 2016 and the response to this outbreak. Meningococcal disease is a rare but severe illness caused by Neisseria meningitides bacteria. It can cause long long-term problems or even death regardless of the speed of the response. Vaccination is the best way to protect self during an outbreak. According to the article, the first outbreak of this disease was reported on January 31, 2016, when the Santa Clara County Public Health Department (SCCPHD) received information about a suspected case in a University graduate student. Two days later, two additional cases were reported in undergraduate students on the same campus. No deaths were reported. However, two patients had milder illness, whereas one patient required intensive care. Laboratory tests showed that two of the patients had Serogroup B Neisseria meningitides in their blood. One of these patients had this bacterium in both cerebrospinal fluid and the blood. The third patient had inconclusive results. Reports show that Serogroup B has been the primary cause of all the US College outbreaks of meningococcal disease since 2011. The article further indicates that the meningococcal serogroup B (MenB) vaccine was used as a response to this outbreak. Rapid response was provided, with the initial vaccination conducted before 48 hours. The availability of a licensed vaccine, increased preparedness and activation of incident command systems, and collaboration between the state and local health departments and the university facilitated this quick response.
