The Sense of Agency and its Connection to Social Construction

The idea of agency has turned out to be a strong foundation and pillar that has been shaping how society and the world operate in general. Agency or free will is described as how people can act on their own without guidance, manipulation or influence from outward forces. Human beings have the ability to act out of free will but there have been many debates whether their actions are purely triggered by freewill or has been somewhat influenced by authoritative figures. Nonetheless, agency has partially made some strides in delivering to its promises such as putting authorities in checks and enhancing freedom of choice despite the interference from authorities and internal and external drives that are frequently attempting to mark their presence. 
Modern governments do not overcontrol their citizens today as they were in ancient times as in the case of Roman Empire. Masses are now more educated and they have learned their rights. Freedom of speech is a component of agency where individuals are permitted to speak their minds freely. Through the media, government representatives are criticized whenever they participate in actions that undermine the citizens' will, livelihood, and existence in society (Haggard & Eitam, 2015). The conversations and debates in the media today are not controlled, something that was not common in the old days. Journalists are not restricted on what to speak about as they can air their opinions and critics without fear of being arrested or punished (Haggard & Eitam, 2015). However, there are few countries that are still practicing media gagging, and this has always been a hindrance to free will. Governments cannot do as they are pleased because there is always a watchdog in the media and the masses. 
Today, individuals have the freedom to choose what they want to do provided it does not interfere with the safety of other humans.
