We are Seven is a poem that expresses the innocence of a child, and how Romantic perspectives are innately embedded in childhood notions. Romanticism is present in the poem in the way it points out the obscurity of a child’s perspective about death, the fact that dead people are separated from them in their reality. The little girl in the poem is unable to realize that her dead siblings are not part of this world anymore. She still perceives her dead siblings in her own imagination, and fully believes them to be a part of her life.
The poem rallies different elements of poetry in the ballad form, which makes it more interesting for the reader or listener. The Romanticism is emphasized in the way the writer portrays the idyllic and simple mind-set of the youth. Another significant concept that mirrors romanticism are the overtones to “argument. The narrator in the poem firmly believes that death is a matter of separation from the living, towards transcendence to a different plane. In the poem, he states that the spirits of the dead are in Heaven, reflecting the narrator’s perspective and belief that the human form has a metaphysical counterpart that may not “count” in the world of nature, yet still exists in a higher or rather, a different dimension.
