Anderson Wendell’s policy report “School dress codes and uniform policies,” published in 2002 by ERIC Publications, argues that in most private, elementary, and middle schools, school uniforms are worn to maintain safety, improve the learning environment, enhance students’ self-esteem, and reduce family stress. Nonetheless, not everyone accepts this characterization of school uniforms. Students, some educators, and civil libertarians believe that school uniforms violate students’ first amendment rights to expression, creativity, and expression of their individuality. Also, it is a shallow policy for serious ills affecting schools. Samantha Deane’s article, “Dressing diversity: politics of difference and the case of school uniforms,” published in 2015 in the Journal of Philosophical Studies in Education, notes that policymakers introduce school uniforms policies as a way to eliminate disruptive behavior, eliminate social economic and maintain high academic performance. However, the pressure to have students see sameness prevents them from dealing with the heterogeneous, playful, plural, and diverse world and forces them to deal with differences and inequalities alone. While school uniforms are considered valuable school wear in creating equality among students and promoting learning and high self-esteem, adopting a dress code appropriate for the school maintains students’ right to choose while observing acceptable dressing guidelines.
Both sides agree that students need to succeed academically and improve their safety and performance thus school uniforms are the way to go. According to Wendell (2002, p. 7-8), school uniforms upholds students’ safety by reducing violence emanating from different styles and color of clothes linked to various gangs and the chances of weapons being smuggled into schools. School uniforms enhance performance by enabling students to concentrate on their classwork instead of what they or others have worn and minimizing disruptive behavior (Deane, 2015, p3). Also, it builds high self-esteem by removing the status that comes with designer labels, the harassment, and bullying that comes with not affording them, eliminating marks of shame and discrimination.
