Summary of important ideas
Author Luiza Costa Ribeiro raises three main ideas in her article. The first main idea is that learning how to write enhances the understanding of college courses and classes. This is because writing requires research and locating credible sources of knowledge, which is essential in studies. As more research is undertaken, the students begin forming their own opinions regarding academic concepts rather than using what has already been said. This enables them to break down complex concepts into simple questions that can be easily understood. Secondly, possessing good writing skills enhances employment possibility of students after graduation. In California, 80% of employees engage in some form of writing because it is part of their daily job responsibility (California Writing Project, University of California). The writing can be in form of business proposals, official emails, and letters. Lastly, good writing skills improve one’s analytical skills and self expression. Analytical skills are obtained when people identify patterns and develop potential solutions during their research. On the other hand, self expression occurs in form of tweets, messages, and other forms of communication that relate to personal thoughts.
