Summary
The article, “In U.S. Restaurants, Bars and Food Trucks, 'Modern Slavery' Persists,” discusses how hospitality industry has become a front for human trafficking. She claims that human trafficking is increasingly becoming a prevalent problem in the United States as compared to sex trafficking. According to her, the social problem is witnessed in over twenty-five businesses where the victims of labor trafficking are brought into the country to work in lure of jobs, legal migration or romantic relationships. She asserts, however, upon arriving from countries such as Vietnam, China Mexico, and Guatemala, they are forced to work in orange farms, dairy farms, prostitution and in restaurant businesses. She argues that the restaurant businesses have become modern slavery due to the approximately 1700 cases reported of immigrants working here. In these industries, the immigrants work as wait staff, cooks and bussers in restaurants, food trucks and buffets while the women are forced to serve drinks and offer commercial sex for their pay and extended stay. Further, she stresses that these victims continually offer these services out of fear of deportation and threats of harming of their families. She concludes by asserting that traffickers are participants in large criminal organizations and the cases are likely to be higher in the restaurant businesses. The article characterizes the issue of human trafficking in the food industry as a prerequisite for both sexual and labor exploitation.
