Similarities between Marsha P. Johnson and Richard Spencer
Marsha P. Johnson and Richard Spencer are American activists who led revolutions and movements to fight for their rights. They are similar in some various ways. Both were pro-policies that seemed to be against the societal and moral perceptions of the community they lived in. Till her death, Johnson led LGBTQ movements and started up revolutions that fought for gay, transgender and drag queen rights in America. She argues that “As long as gay people don’t have rights in America; there is no reason to celebrate” (Jay & Young, 1992). Spencer on the other hand is a nationalist who believes that other races make his country impure and he fights for a white-only state and was reported saying “My ancestors enslaved those people” (Cheney-Rice, 2019) Both have had confrontations with the authorities and Johnson was at one time jailed for organizing and leading a street protest. Spencer also had a brawl with the authorities who were trying to separate his group with another that was demonstrating against his policies.
Differences between Spencer and Johnson
Johnson’s activities ended a while ago after her death and currently her protests seem to have already bore fruits with the acceptance of the LGBTQ community in the modern society. Spencer’s ideologies have faced massive opposition not only from the society but also from the government and despite having followers, many people still think that the policies he proposes are misguided. Moreover, Johnson was focused on fighting for rights in a time where the gay people were seen as taboos and not accepted in the societies. Johnson on the other hand tries to separate the whites from other races which he term as enemies.
