In “When I was in Xia village” by Ding Ling, Zhenzhen was taken from a Japanese village by Japanese aggressors and raped her, and Zhenzhen decided to become a spy for the Communists in China. Ling uses Zhenzhen’s and the villagers’ point of view of the villagers to highlight the political situation and Zhenzhen’s experiences. In “Na han” (Call to Arms) by Lu Xun the author uses internal focalization in the first-person and the story tells the story from the author’s point of view and his experiences. Both works use narration, metaphors, symbols to highlight aspects of Chinese life, but Ling focuses more on the experiences of young females and Xu the political situation
Ling and Xun used the subjective narrative style to explore the lives of Chinese people and integrated political themes. While Ling highlights female subjectivity as refaced in the lives of the female subjects who are sexually repressed and shamed, she highlights the role of the political environment suppressing women. Furthermore, the narrator is a passive outsider who discovers the plight of women such as Zhenzhen and treatment of women by the Communist Party (CCP). Xun begins the story by stating that when he was young he had dreams and this hints that the story is about him, his experiences and observations.
