There is a mental representation that the visual system creates in what people see in their respective environments. The system may often find it challenging when one changes instances such as night driving when there is an oncoming vehicle, artificial light where there is low light intensity, among other situations. While people frequently assume their ability to undertake these variations efficiently, psychological perception may significantly hinder or lower visual satisfaction. There are various psychological dimensions of vision, which determine the overall visual system efficiency.
Spatial awareness; encompasses the external stimuli interpretation of the objects around an individual. It also involves how people comprehend their location and meaning and the future forecast or imagination. Studies show that the cognitive process is enhanced by depth perception and visual field, vital visual system elements. When one can assess objects’ distance around their environment, they have efficient depth perception. Human’s facial anatomy is said to primarily determine the field of view, with the approximate field of view measurements being 60°, 60°, 100°, and 70° nasally, superiorly, temporally, and inferiorly, respectively (Jubin et al., 2018).
The other psychological dimension of vision is discriminating efficiency, which can distinguish various components within an environment. It measures the number of correct discriminations as a fraction of all discriminations. Unlike the spatial awareness dimension, it is enhanced by four different visual system capabilities: resolution, which is the shorted distance within which someone can distinguish two points; stereoacuity that relates to the shortest term interval an individual may detect; chromatic contrast, which is a scene or image’s difference in chromaticity; and motion detection threshold, the lowest displacement required to accurately assess motion’s direction (Jubin et al., 2018).
Finally, there is visual endurance, which entails the intrinsic ability to detect changes and ignore stable, constant stimuli. Hence, it refers to the measure of someone’s expectation of comfortable vision over time. Jubin et al. (2018) assert that any visual quality change gives rise to discomfort or inconvenience. They add that the vision is negatively impacted when exposed to conditions to which their visual system has adjusted. Some of them include digital device use, night driving, or prolonged near work.
