Proteins
Role in energy production
Living organisms including people require an outside source of energy and materials and the food provides nutrients and energy carries out reactions such as building proteins. The body burns carbohydrates and fats and if they are not available burns proteins.
Role in performance
During exercises and physical activities, proteins are broken down and need to be replenished for muscle damage repair, proteins are important to build strength and there are other functions such as tissue growth, hormone and enzyme synthesis.
Recommended types
The daily protein requirements depend on age and gender, and physical activities, and while animal proteins contains most of the essential amino acids, white meat and lean meat are the preferred options. Fish, eggs, or dairy and plant proteins such as beans, nuts, and soy products are good sources of proteins.
Types that are not recommended
Sugary yoghurts, deep fried meats, processed foods with meat and those with high levels of sodium and additives such as many types of sausages and hot dogs.
Carbohydrates
Role in energy production
Carbohydrates are the main source of energy and when one eats the carbohydrates they are broken down into the smaller sugars that are then used for energy. When there is unused glucose they are converted into glycogen, which is stored in the muscles and liver and used in future (Heydenreich et al., 2017)
Role in performance
Carbohydrates are required in performance as the nutrients delay fatigue, which allows one to perform a longer period of time while using less fat or muscle protein (Thomas, Erdman & Burke, 2016). When working out for long more carbohydrates are required to help in maintaining the muscle glycogen, which is useful in the high intensity exercises.
