Through Gulliver’s Travel, swift frequently has Gulliver speak directly to the reader, sometimes exposing Gulliver’s faulty assumptions regarding social interaction and sometimes forcing the accrual flesh and blood readers to question their moral assumptions. And Swift was not the only author to attend to the idea of the reader Aphra Behn, Eliza Haywood, Philip Sidney, Olaudah Equiano and Joseph Addison all make assumptions about their readers’ concerns, interest and desires .Compare the way three or four different prose writers create the idea of the reader in their texts.
In English literature, Aphra Behn and Eliza Haywood are among the women prose writers whose works in early modern English-language literature have been explored and cited. Even though, the two mainly focused on amatory fiction, they focused on liberty just like Olaudah Equiano, and when they focused on the racialized liberty plots there are political intentions. The narrative approach in the works of Behn, Haywood and Equiano highlight the writers’ attempt at connecting with the readers and producing authoritative voices.
Olaudah Equiano views on the abolition of slavery the treatment of blacks is most prominent them and he also focused on liberty as he understood it. In this way, he took readers through his thoughts on the impact of racially limited freedom as embarked on his journey to from an enslaved African to a free man in England. Equiano is a witness to his own freedom where he recounted and narrated his experience from a chattel to a person and he uses a narrative approach successfully. Aphra Behn’s prose fiction, Oroonoko about an enslaved African prince also uses the narrative style, but since the writer has not experienced slavery her account is more fictionalized. Nonetheless, the approach is successful, as Oroonoko evokes sympathy from the readers as the narrator recounts the story.
