The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) calls the pre-procedure rinse the antimicrobial mouth rinse that is performed by dentists before a specific dental procedure. The primary objective of the pre-procedure mouth rinse is to decrease microorganisms that patients might splatter or release as aerosols during a dental procedure, which can contaminate dental hygienists. A pre-procedure mouth rinse is a beneficial treatment that should be utilized as a part of comprehensive care to decrease the risk of contamination during a dental procedure.
Pre-procedure mouth rinses are beneficial since they reduce the probability of contamination or infection to patients and dental hygienists. Recent scientific evidence portrays that pre-procedure rinse is crucial in cleaning oral cavities and reducing the pathogenicity and transmission of COVID-19 (Herrera, Serrano, Roldan, & Sanz, 2020). Coronavirus pandemic is a deadly disease that has claimed the lives of many people, which is why physicians should do their best to avoid its transmission. Bio-aerosols are airborne and routinely generated in clinical dentistry, particularly by operative instrumentation in an oral environment (Samaranayake, Fakhruddin, Buranawat, & Panduwawala, 2021). Notably, pre-procedure mouth rinse ensures that these microorganisms are eliminated before a dental procedure begins.
Pre-procedure mouth rinses have other numerous advantages. They include freshening individuals' breathe, controlling or preventing tooth decay, reducing or preventing gingivitis, and eradicating plaque formation on gums and teeth. Without applying the pre-procedure mouth rinse method, it can be challenging for dentists to extract teeth from patients with gum bleeding disorders (Mohan & Jagannathan, 2016). If bacteria get into the bloodstream of a patient during teeth extraction, it can be spread to other parts of the body. Dentists can as well get infected from patients when extracting teeth if they do not perform pre-procedure mouth rinse, which only takes a few seconds.
