This week I will be giving you a longer reading by historian Richard White about the creation of the Transcontinental Railroad. White is a well-known historian of the American West. This is from the first chapter of his 2011 book "Railroad." Read this article first, which you can find in the "Coursepack" folder of this course, then I want you to respond to the following question:
In around 200 words or so, analyze how the Transcontinental Railroad was funded (as described by Richard White). Who were some of the major players in this and what were their roles? How did they find funding? What does this story suggest about the relationship between business and government in the United States in the late 1800s?
