The economic convergence of the European Union concept had experienced challenges and enthusiasm since it was formulated. The level of interest was high during the big eastern enlargement from 2004 to 2007. After that, there was a debt crisis that caused political changes, which gained attention of the EU level policy.
There is an ongoing economic recovery, and the last parliament election in 2014 caused the 28 countries in the EU to have more similarities. The inflation rate differences have shrunk to the lowest level in the last 20 years, and the unemployment rate gaps have become narrow. However, it was still higher before the crisis happened (Romei, 2019).
