As the world grapples with civilization, the human species has adopted varying ways of knowledge acquisition. Philosophers took a commanding lead in the past centuries before the advent of science. In the current era, the two modes of knowledge acquisition are mostly perceived to be more of foes than friends. Nonetheless, philosophy remains an influential aspect in knowledge acquisition, and the role it plays even for the scientific methods is immense. With that regard, this paper intends to denounce the perceived antagonistic relationship between philosophy and science while painting a picture of two interdependent disciplines.
A thorough understanding of the terms philosophy and science is of great importance to establish the relationships between the two. According to Warburton (2013), philosophy is concerned with examining the beliefs and norms that the human species have ascribed to without paying much attention to the underlying logic behind the norm or belief. The concept of philosophy can be best understood by looking at the works and arguments of ancient philosophers such as Aristotle, Plato, Descartes, Kant, and a few others. Philosophy serves to question the fundamental issues that in essence define what life is and among those issues is science. Science or rather the scientific methods is often regarded as an alternative to philosophy.
