In this week’s readings you had the opportunity to study and explore personality development as viewed in the humanistic school of thought. In this assignment, you will be examining the life of a famous person and identifying components of self-actualization in their life.
This week you will complete a 2-3-page expository paper investigating a famous person from the list provided, and examining their journey toward becoming fully functioning and self-actualized. You will use a minimum of two peer-reviewed sources from the library in addition to the textbook and provided biography.
Give a brief overview of Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs.
Define self-actualization using your own words and supporting it with a reliable supporting it with at least one reliable source, either from the library or from the textbook.
Select one of the following individuals (below), read the related biographical article and provide a brief introduction to the background of your selected individual, appropriately using quotes and paraphrasing when needed to support the facts.
Examine the selected individual and apply at least 3 characteristics of a self-actualized person to their life, giving examples and supporting the applied characteristics with a reliable source.

Maslow’s Theory
In his theory, Maslow contends that people's actions are motivated by physiological and psychological needs that vary from simple to more complicated ones. He also believes that the needs are similar to inclinations that influence human behavior. There are five levels of Maslow's needs, usually depicted as a pyramid, and they are arranged from the most basic needs to the more complicated ones. As illustrated in his pyramid, the needs are physiological, safety, belonging, esteem, and the top-most one is self-actualization.
Self-actualization refers to the absolute fulfillment of one's abilities and capabilities. Maslow described it as the process of people becoming everything they are capable of. He placed self-actualization at the top of his five needs levels, probably denoting its complexity and importance. That gives credence to the fact that it is only obtained after achieving all the other survival needs. As such, it is people's desire to realize themselves and manifest what they are inherently endowed with (Guesmi et al., 2022). Some of the characteristics of self-actualization are the inclination to be mindful of others as opposed to self-centered, comfortable with uncertainties, creative, and liberal. In addition, self-actualized people live every moment at a time and easily accept situations as they come.
Helen Keller’s Biography
Helen Keller, the first deaf-blind person to attain a bachelor’s degree, was born in 1880 in Tuscumbia, Alabama. She had been born a normal child, but a debilitating illness rendered her blind and deaf at only nineteen months of age (Pettinger, 2017). This development ultimately hampered her communication with others since she could only use a few signs. In 1886, Helen was sent to an eye, ear, and nose specialist in Baltimore, who referred her to Alexander Graham Bell. At the time, Bell was researching issues of deafness and sound. He found working with Keller an inspirational experience which made him declare, "I feel that in this child I have seen more of the Divine than has been manifest in anyone I have ever met before."
