Life is beautiful. Exploring the secret of life makes our life even more beautiful. When I was young, I heard this sentence countless times. Recently I heard the same on a TV program named Discovery. I liked to touch small animals and plants and listen to them because I thought they had their specific souls and minds. Because of my strange behavior, my friends always thought I was a freak. I was not a great man; I didn’t have some especially ambitious goals. It has just dawned on me that at the moment, I can make my own choices; choose the University I want and the major. I hope I can study Biology merely to satisfy personal curiosity.
On May 12th, 2008, the worst earthquake in the past decades struck Sichuan Province, China. I lived in Xi'an and strongly felt the tremor. I was eight at the moment the earthquake occurred. I had no other thoughts at that afternoon, just anxiously waited for my mom. I missed her very much. Her work left me with the impression that when a disaster occurs, the word that bore weight "assistance." That meant that she had to leave to go to the area of the incidence. Every TV channel reported that the deaths and missing persons continued to rise.
I felt very scared that my mom would never return. I could not fall asleep that night. Two days later, my mom went to the frontier line of this disaster. Before she left, I begged her to take me with her. When we boarded the rescue aircraft, I wished my mom could hold me. Most buildings were razed in worst-hit areas with so many people, including school students, buried underneath the ruins. Only a few teachers and students escaped.
The casualties were so many, and I felt like if I were in a better position, I would have been a useful man. I would have saved lives. Unfortunately, I couldn't. I had no skills. At the same time, I never wanted to be a doctor. So I looked at other ways in which I could be useful, I thought I would still do better in the field of biology. I didn’t want to do medicine because I lacked the passion. I felt like medicine is too hard and demanding. Simply because biology is somehow directly linked to life, I would still be useful.
I may not have professional skills in Biology (something I am seeking), but I have hands-on skills. Besides, I can work collaboratively in teamwork to bring out something useful. To support this fact, I once worked with a group of people whom we prepared to make a robot. In order to make the robot, we required to be conversant with programming and spell Lego Bricks.
