Essay Instructions:

Instruction: In 1100 words, reflect on a catastrophe that you have experienced – whether a personal one or a public one, entirely up to you – and consider how the frameworks and texts of our class inform your understanding of it now.
You can choose which texts you refer to, but I will require you to reference at least two of ANY of our readings from the entire semester.
You have complete control over the form you choose. Options might include: a personal essay (like Leslie Jamison’s “Empathy Exams” or Jesmyn Ward’s “On Grief and Respair”), a piece of journalism (like Louise Erdrich’s “Holy Rage”), a speech (like Audre’s Lorde “The Cancer Journals”), a series of blog posts or a twitter thread, etc. You can even write a short story, poem or play, though I then ask for an accompanying reflection on your creative piece to explain some of your stylistic choices (for a total of 1000 words). And, if you prefer, you are also welcome to produce a traditional academic essay.
Grading Guidelines
I will be looking first and foremost at (1) your ability to sustain an investigation into a catastrophe and (2) your ability to reflect on our course, which includes both (a) your ability to incorporate two texts and (b) to clearly enunciate what you have learned.
Although you will not be writing an argumentative piece, you will still be making a series of claims about how you understand the material of our class, so you should still have an introduction that clearly lays out your major ideas, clear sentence structures that establish the various topics and a conclusion that summarizes and extends your thinking.
Advice (you don’t have to answer all of the following, but they might help you get started!):
As I mentioned in the syllabus, this is intended to double as a reflective piece in which you both establish and explore your major takeaways from the class. You might consider: what are major topics that have recurred in our discussions? How do you feel about those ideas? Were there ones that you disagreed with that you want to respond to? Ones that you agreed with that you want to address more fully? How has reading these texts impacted you – or has it not? Why? What texts were particularly impactful, if any? Has your perspective changed at all?
I will post the style of the article I wrote before. The analysis frame and the tone of writing should be like same as my previous article, in order make sure there's no problem for grading. ddl is 12.9 1-2 pm EDT

Dealing with the Loss of a Pet
In the class, I got an opportunity to study two materials that changed my perspective on dealing with grief and loss. The first one is Audre Lorde’s “The Cancer Journals.” The author narrates her experience with cancer and the painful recovery process after mastectomy surgery. Lorde, a black lesbian feminist, demonstrates what it is to go through one of the most traumatic experiences and yet come out successfully and stronger. Lorde is not just a writer; she has had a one-on-one experience with every detail she presents. The second material is Leslie Jamison’s “The Empathy Exams,” where the writer narrates her experience as a medical actor who earned a living from acting out symptoms for the medical students to diagnose. The book delves into the idea of understanding others through empathy. The two materials connect with my traumatic experience of saying goodbye to my beloved Charlie after living together for ten years. Charlie had become a member of the family. I knew that a dog’s life is significantly shorter than that of humans, but I did not expect it to be this short. What followed was a challenging period of grief since Charlie was a part of me. Reading the class materials resonated well with my traumatic experience. This essay will demonstrate how the readings allowed me to understand the traumatic experience and deal with it.
Lorde emphasizes the importance of having people during a traumatic experience. Love from close family members and friends is critical in dealing with loss and grief. These people understand us well and are better positioned to deal with us. The writer indicates, “It was not only women closest to me, although they were the backbone. There was Frances…” (Lorde 32). Here, Lorde acknowledges that it was because of the love she received from those close to her that she managed to overcome the traumatic experience. In the same way, I realized that having people around is critical in the healing process. Trying to imagine what Charlie went through would torment me. I would always question myself if I had done enough for him and something I could have done. Sometimes I would blame myself for his death, not knowing exactly why. Immediately after his death, I started feeling lonely since I was used to seeing Charlie in the house. Now he was no more, gone and never to be seen again. I thought that no one would understand what I was going through, resulting in keeping all issues to myself. My mother noticed that I was keeping so much to myself, and she decided to intervene. At the same time, a female friend started visiting me and engaging with me throughout the process. Their actions resonated with what Lorde experienced during her traumatizing moment. She summarizes the whole experience by saying, “Perhaps, I can say this all more simply; I say the love of women healed me” (Lorde 32).
