Perception, cognition, and emotion are essential building blocks in all types of social interactions (Lewicki et al., 2016 p.2). Accordingly, negotiation is one such social interaction pervaded by the three building blocks in the way it plays out. It follows that parties involved in negotiation will be guided in their approach through how they analyze, feel, or perceive each other (Lewicki et al., 2016 p. 89). This paper focusses on an article by CNN dated January 13, 2020, concerning diplomatic negotiations between the U.S and North Korea on denuclearization at the Korean Peninsula. In the preceding, there is an attempt to show the links to psychological perception, cognition through decisions to use specific tactics and strategies as well as expression of emotion in the case of negotiation under consideration.
To begin with, both the U.S and North Korea have individual opinions of each other, which determined how they perceived each other in the negotiation. As noted in the text, North Korea held the view that the U.S has always persisted with hostile policy towards their nuclear program; thus, based on this perception, the nation was of the opinion that no denuclearization would be realized on their soil (LeBlanc, 2020).
