Nursing Professional Standards: Inappropriate Post, Responsibilities, and Christian Values

Essay Instructions:

Social media plays a significant role in the lives of nurses in both their professional and personal lives. Additionally, social media is now considered a mainstream part of the process for recruiting and hiring candidates. Inappropriate or unethical conduct on social media can create legal problems for nurses as well as the field of nursing.
Login to all social media sites in which you engage. Review your profile, pictures and posts. Based on the professional standards of nursing, identify items that would be considered unprofessional and potentially detrimental to your career and that negatively impact the reputation of the nursing field.
In 500-750 words, summarize the findings of your review. Include the following:
Describe the posts or conversations in which you have engaged that might be considered inappropriate based on the professional standards of nursing.
Discuss why nurses have a responsibility to uphold a standard of conduct consistent with the standards governing the profession of nursing at work and in their personal lives. Include discussion of how personal conduct can violate HIPAA or be considered unethical or unprofessional. Provide an example of each to support your answer.
Based on the analysis of your social media, discuss what areas of your social media activity reflect Christian values as they relate to respecting human value and dignity for all individuals. Describe areas of your social media activity that could be improved.

In a shift in the burn unit, I dressed the wounds of a man who had suffered third-degree burns and was in constant pain despite pain medications. I may not have shared the client’s name or when he was at the hospital, but the post is inappropriate. According to the American Nurses Association (2001, pp. 16-17), a nurse should uphold and promote ethical standards of protecting the client’s privacy and confidentiality by not sharing their personal information or treatment regimen. I also shared my frustrations with numerous drunk patients who came in on Halloween night for puking on me and wearing weird and scary costumes that made some patients uncomfortable. I also complained of being overworked thus, not having personal time. I know it is unprofessional to air discontentment public, especially when I have not done so with management, as it makes my employer susceptible to negative publicity (Cherry & Jacob, 2018).
Responsibility to Uphold a Standard of Conduct at Work and in Their Personal Lives
According to Jan Goldsmith (2011), nurses have to uphold similar standards of conduct in their work and personal lives to earn the public’s trust. As the honest and ethical occupation in the United States, trust is the primary aspect that gives a nurse the privilege to care for patients in various capacities. If their trustworthiness were to be doubted based on their actions or views in their personal lives, it would make it challenging for patients to accept their help or open up to them. Thus, it would be challenging to perform their duties effectively (Goldsmith, 2011).
A nurse’s action of gossiping with her friends, workmates, or social media about their celebrity patient and what they are being treated for, violates HIPAA as it violates...
