Philosophy is the composition of an individual’s beliefs and values articulated in a form of a statement. It is the source of identity and actions taken by an individual, and what path they would take from the present to the future. From this, all fields of expertise relate their journey to the philosophy they form from themselves or formed for themselves. In addition, philosophy can be defined as a concept that reflects a specific principle towards specific fields which would lead to the people’s formation of their respective philosophies, where these are the concepts that people learn through education. Therefore, as a student nurse, I present myself having the same nursing philosophy as my foundation and core to build a more solid form.
Current Philosophy
Yoder-Wise et al. (2018) explained that nursing philosophy envisions the practices that nurses should behold inside the organization while also determining the contribution and influence of these actions towards the health of the patients and the community. Incorporating this definition, I presume myself having the same patient-centered philosophy by knowing how to balance and maintain my relationships with my patients, co-nurses, and myself while being rational and realistic. Before, I had envisioned myself to be a holistic and therapeutic nurse that comforts and heals patients with my best effort. Due to my past experiences of meeting an exceptional nurse, I idolized this profession with assuming that I know the weight of my actions. I assumed that I can be a creative, artistic, and effective communicator to my patients, unconsciously putting pressure on myself.
One time, I had encountered an experience that changed my perspective of being a nurse, it was time when I was exposed to a patient which triggered my internal values and beliefs which then led to internal conflict. It was a rather hard time as despite wanting to help the patient whole-heartedly, and still knowing that there is no more than we can do, enlightened me that despite having the value of helping the patients, there are still limits to actions that we could take. From then, I sought myself to still follow the same philosophy that I have while knowing the extent and limit of these actions. Therefore, I chose my philosophy to be as more realistic as possible while incorporating the same principles that I had before and to influence, not only my patients but also myself and the environment with positive changes.
