The nurse-client relationship was first described by Hildegard Peplau in1952. It is an interaction aimed to promote the growth of the client. There is a difference between professional nurse-client relationship and social relationship. In social relationship, the people involved both benefit by sharing their problems and limitation to time spent together does not arise. In professional relationship, the nurse focuses on the client’s needs by using social interaction with the main goal being to improve the health of the client within the time both are willing and able to spend (Antai, 2008).
The nurse-client relationship has three phases: the orientation phase where the relationship, goals and time limit are set, working phase and termination phase.
