In “What Was Known?” Shapin (1998) offers a broad overview of a primary seventeenth century philosophical enterprise: corpuscular mechanism. In Shapin’s account, major natural philosophers, particularly René Descartes and Robert Boyle, argued for a mathematical view of natural world informed by concepts of “matter” and “motion”. According to a mathematical, or corpuscular mechanism, view, nature is made up of infinitely reducible corpuscles whose qualities (e.g. shape, size and color) define and render each object unique. This mathematization of qualities, explains Shapin, was not always consistent but varied among different natural philosophers. For example, while Descartes was at an extreme end of detailed explanation of corpuscular nature, Boyle, more reserved and consistent to an English natural philosophy convention, only conferred a mathematical/anatomized process of natural reality, or world, and refrained from offering any detailed explanation of how corpuscles “operate” and/or are made up of.
