Hypertension is a crippling lifetime condition also known as high blood pressure (HBP) This medical condition involves the persistent elevation of the arteries and has no identifiable symptoms. However, the condition can place an individual at risk of other conditions such as dementia, kidney failure, loss of vision, peripheral arterial disease stroke and heart failure. Lifestyle factors increase the chances of high blood pressure with activities such as smoking, alcohol consumption excess body weight and use of excess salt in a diet. Therefore, lifestyle change is one of the most recommended methods to deal with high blood pressure. Medication, a healthy diet, and physical exercise are important. Technology is also being utilized in managing this condition through home blood pressure monitoring in people of all ages. The literature review is meant to determine the efficiency of technology in monitoring blood pressure. Also, find out if technology monitoring boosts HBP control within six months in baby boomers
Baby boomers are a term that is used to refer to adults born between the years of 1946 and 1964. At the moment of writing this literature review, this group of people makes up the elderly population in our society. The first article’s research question revolves around the review of medical databases for wearable devices used by the elderly. By having the database, it is easier to provide the elderly with flexible and wearable medical devices. The devices demonstrate the ability to monitor vital signs through their well-programmed applications. The use of technological applications is essential in the medical field as they can monitor chronic illnesses and provide real-time actionable data.
This highlights the massive potential that technology has to impact the medical field and provide a long-term solution to the elderly population in managing their illnesses. Technology is always changing and new devices are being created which is good as it creates endless possibilities and ways it can be used in medical fields. This has led to the idea that contactless blood pressure monitoring can be possible through the use of a camera. To make sure that the elderly in the community can utilize the technology in the first place, there should be systems and that make these services available to them. In addition to that, the integrated systems should be able to monitor the wellbeing of elderly individuals having access to their services and technology gadgets.
To determine the usefulness of wearable devices in monitoring high blood pressure, there is a systematic review of medical databases that show the wearable devices being used by the elderly. The sample population consists of PubMed, MDPI, Sage, and Scopus which are examples of medical databases. Also, a total of 4915 articles and 31 studies were identified and included in the review after meeting a certain criterion.
