Potters from Gujarat are some of the earliest inhabitants of Dharavi. They made their way into the area over 80 years ago (the video says over 70 years ago but it is 10 years old and hence the difference).

85 percent of the people in Dharavi are employed. This is surprising because with the conditions people are living in, it is surprising that jobs are readily available. Another surprising bit is that these jobs exist within Dharavi and as McCloud says, some people never leave the slum.
Describe some of the main economic activities of people in the settlement.
There are people who are doing small businesses which include chemists/pharmacies and shops. There is also the pottery business which is also quite huge in Dharavi as the people there need the pots for cooking and fetching water.
Aside from the above activities, there are also factories operating in Dharavi. One of the major ones is the bakery business which is thriving and selling to the whole of Mumbai. There is also the shoe business which is also thriving and employing many people of Dharavi.
