In today's world, it is common to see students wearing uniforms to school. According to Wolfe (2020), to some individuals, mandatory school uniforms play an important role in ensuring a positive outcome for the students who wear them as well as the school as a whole. Wearing school uniform is said to help reduce any tension due to social class differences while they are at school. It is also said to help students focus on their education and to foster a sense of community in a learning environment. Those who oppose the compulsory wearing of school uniforms argue that uniforms have a negative impact on students' personalities. According to Shanks (2020), wearing uniforms to school limits students' ability to express who they truly are, and it also leads to an increase in student policing. It is also said to be costly since they available in limited suppliers. Although wearing school uniforms significantly increases student policing it still promotes equality, therefore, there should be room for students to wear other attire on different school activity for diversity and expression of their individuality.
Those in furtherance of mandatory school uniforms make the case that wearing the same uniform to school reduces bullying significantly. According to Wolfe (2020), the majority of school bullying occurs because a student wears clothing that others perceive to be unfashionable. As a result of mandatory school uniforms, everyone arrives dressed in the same clothes, significantly reducing bullying cases. Furthermore, Wendell (2002) claims that wearing school uniforms increases student safety. It is easy to identify who is not a student in a school setting, which helps to ensure that unattended individuals do not enter the school grounds. Furthermore, wearing uniform outside the school compound increases student safety because the public, even from a distance, is more likely to notice them.
Also, those in favor of mandatory school uniforms argue that uniforms promote dress code equality among students. According to Wolfe (2020), a lot of rules must be established when students wear home clothes to school to ensure that what they wear is appropriate. Thus, school uniform is deemed necessary to ensure that students wearing uniforms have a sense of equality. Furthermore, requiring students to wear school uniforms creates a less distracting environment for them. According to Wendell (2002), students who are not concerned with what is fashionable or what they should wear the next day are able to focus more on their academics, which is beneficial to them. Therefore, wearing a school uniform helps students get into the right mindset for learning.
