People from all over the world can communicate using social media platforms. However, social media platforms can be where people are bullied or discriminated against. Bullying through electronic media is commonly referred to as cyberbullying (Zhu et al., 2021). Furthermore, cyberbullying is a common problem among students. Since students begin using devices at a young age, their understanding of how social media works is broad; they understand that it is a potent tool. Cyberbullying includes sending hateful messages, spamming offensive messages, posting pictures or videos that embarrass other students, or creating posts to humiliate others and solicit additional comments. Therefore, since this problem commonly occurs, school administrators, teachers, and parents must know how to respond when a student is involved in bullying. It is also necessary that their actions are aligned with state statutes, district school board policies, and the school’s handbook. These bases will guide the school in taking the proper steps to address cyberbullying.
State Statutes on Cyberbullying
Schools and parents must take some steps to address cyberbullying. First, it is necessary to speak with the victim. The victim needs to be consoled then, and it is not appropriate for the teacher to be mad or interrogative; instead, the teacher should be a listener during this challenging time for a student. Statutes require teachers to report cases to the designated official once they have gathered the necessary information to investigate them. The designated official must respond immediately by providing intervention strategies to protect the victimized student from further bullying.
