The character Macbeth, in William Shakespeare’s tragedy “Macbeth,” is the most interesting figure reflecting the theme of unceasing desire for power, which is evident in contemporary society. Yet, his wife Lady Macbeth thinks that his Macbeth’s nature of being not too ruthless enough limits his chances of achieving the highest echelon of power (Di Biase, 2001). Like many tragic stories, Shakespeare makes his audience follow through Macbeth’s life in the play by portraying what he can do at his best: authority and corruption. Macbeth murders Duncan to gain power as a king, but as he gains the power, he is incapable of demonstrating the mastery of power and the role of a king (Dungey, 2012). Finally, his craving for power and remaining at the top contributes to his downfall. Since history, leaders have craved power, and as they acquire more power, they become increasingly corrupt.
In Macbeth, Shakespeare shows a correlation between the expanse of power Macbeth achieves and the level of exploitation in his life. Corruption has always tainted images of those in authority, with an example of Tsunekazu Takeda, the Japanese Olympic Committee (JOC) chief exposed over corruption cases relating to the bidding process for Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games (CNN.com, 2019). Takeda was forced to step down from his position as the head of JOC for his role in suspected fraud of about $2m (Keohane & Ahmed, 2019).elsewhere, the former International Association of Athletics Federation (IAAF), Lamine Diack is also facing trial over corrupt charges associated to doping (Keohane & Ahmed, 2019).
